“If these walls could talk!” You know the phrase.

It’s the idea that the walls of a room have witnessed first hand the collection of memories that have taken place there. They’ve heard raucous laughter, seen heavy tears, smelled incredible meals, and felt the weight of a home’s inhabitants as they leaned against its walls for support. “If these walls could talk” is just a different way of saying these walls have weathered the passage of time with grace.

If the cabin walls could talk, they’d tell you about my great grandfather who built them. These boards of knotty pine would say how my own Papa after him kept the walls up. They’d smile as they recounted the time my sister and I pretended to be cooking show hosts and I had a meltdown when I dropped the knife on my toe. I was fine. The walls saw me quickly go from sobbing to soothed. They’d beam thinking of my dad in different headphones through the years. They’d tell you about the first time they saw new faces that would become familiar enter the cabin: Grandma, my Mom, my aunts and uncle, and all the grandkids. The walls welcomed us."
