Ethics & Sustainability
Cesium Yarn believes in treating humans, animals, and the planet kindly. We believe yarn is a positive force as it brings people together, promotes mental health, and makes use of sustainable fibers that are obtained without harm to animals. We understand that even with these great reasons to practice fiber arts, there are other considerations that affect the choices surrounding yarn and fiber. In an effort to be fully transparent, we have addressed these concerns here. If you have questions about any other practices or policies, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Mulesing-Free Promise
Mulesing is a practice performed by some sheep farmers that involves cutting sections of skin off of the hindquarters of sheep to reduce chances of infection. This can cause health complications for the sheep and is an unnecessarily cruel practice. All of the fiber suppliers we work with pledge that they and their associates do not practice mulesing. If a supplier cannot make this promise, we will not work with them.
Anti-Fat Tax Discount
All bodies deserve clothing that fits and feels good. Unfortunately, knit and crochet patterns in bigger sizes require more yarn, which means clothes cost more for fat folks. In an effort to make up for this, we have implemented a discount on large sweater quantities of yarn. When you buy 8 or more skeins in a single order, we drop the cost per skein by $5 when you enter the discount code FATTAXFREE in your cart. This makes our Merino and BFL bases $25/skein. Mix and match colorways to your heart’s content! If you're buying between 5 and 7 skeins of fingering or DK yarn, use FATFRIEND for $3 off each skein.
Yarn Abundance
We believe yarn should be available to everyone when they are in the place to access it. We have a robust section of dyed-to-order colorways so you can get the yarn you want when you want it. We understand that you can't always make an order happen on the release day of a new collection, and want to make sure you still get the joy of holding a yarn you love in your hands! This is the beauty of being a small yarn dyer: we are able to make your yarn especially for you.
Website Accessibility
We use descriptive alt text on all of our images and links so that people who use screen readers can get the full experience. We also work with a web developer to ensure our website is designed with vision-impaired viewers in mind.
Sustainable Packaging
We use 100% recycled poly mailers made of 50% post-consumer waste and 50% industrial waste. Our mailers can be recycled at thin film recycling centers, including most grocery stores. Their soft sides mean each package takes up less space during shipping, while their waterproof, oil-proof material ensures a safe trip for your yarn.
Carbon-Neutral Shipping
We offset the carbon put out by shipping our yarn using a service called Planet. When we ship an order, we pay into a fund for a group of companies that harvest and store carbon dioxide in amounts equal to or greater than the amount released in the journey from our door to yours, with the goal of storing that carbon for 1,000 years or more.
